Sister ship to the HMNZS Canterbury, the Waikato was a 2nd batch variant of the Harland and Wolff Leander's. Intentionally sunk in 2000 as an artificial reef with the key distinction of having her bow gun onboard, she has since been torn in two by the ocean swells, with the Bow lying on her port side some 20 meters from her stern. Again, a fantastic training ground for penetration diving, or simply an evocative dive to prowl around she is a wonderful resource to have nearby.
The HMNZS Waikato is a short ride along the coast from the Tutukaka Marina.
